The Internet Speed Calculator converts an internet speed into every unit at once, between bits per second (bps, Kbps, Mbps, Gbps, Tbps) and bytes per second (B/s, KB/s, MB/s, GB/s).
Key Terminology:
Bit vs Byte :
Speeds in Mbps use bits; speeds in MB/s use bytes. One byte is 8 bits, so MB/s is always 8 times smaller than Mbps.
Conversion rule :
MB/s to Mbps: multiply by 8. Mbps to MB/s: divide by 8.
Why it matters :
Internet providers advertise speed in Mbps, while download managers and browsers usually show MB/s. A 100 Mbps plan downloads at most about 12.5 MB/s.
Unit prefixes :
All prefixes are decimal: 1 Kbps = 1,000 bps, 1 Mbps = 1,000 Kbps, 1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps.
Example :
10 MB/s = 80 Mbps, and 100 Mbps = 12.5 MB/s.
